The Sky Lords

FolkloreSpeculativeUnverified

The Anunnaki are the gods of Sumerian and Akkadian religion, reinterpreted by the author Zecharia Sitchin in 1976 as giant visitors from a planet called Nibiru who engineered humans as a labour force. Assyriologists reject his readings of the texts, but the idea has become one of the most searched alien topics in the world.

Physical profile

In the Mesopotamian sources the Anunnaki have no fixed appearance: they are gods, shown in art as human figures of great size wearing horned crowns, long beards and layered robes, sometimes with wings. The ancient-astronaut version keeps the giant scale, describing beings eight to ten feet tall, and adds the vocabulary of visitors: flying craft, protective suits, advanced tools. XenoAtlas renders the type as the art of Assyria and Babylon presents it, monumental and bearded, because that is the only description with a source.

Reported origin

In Sumerian religion the Anunnaki are the children of An, the sky god, and include Enlil, lord of the wind, and Enki, lord of fresh water and wisdom. They lived in the heavens and the underworld and decreed the fates of humanity. Zecharia Sitchin's The 12th Planet (1976) proposed instead that they came from Nibiru, a planet on a 3,600-year orbit that he claimed the Sumerians knew, and that they arrived on Earth around 450,000 years ago to mine gold.

No such planet exists. Astronomers have searched the outer Solar System thoroughly enough to rule out any large body on the orbit Sitchin described, and the 'Nibiru cataclysm' predicted for 2003 and then 2012 did not occur. Assyriologists, including Michael Heiser, have shown that Sitchin's translations of the cuneiform texts do not support his readings; the words he cited do not mean what he said they mean.

Culture

The mythological Anunnaki form a divine assembly that meets to decide the affairs of gods and humans, and the epics record their quarrels: Enlil's decision to destroy humanity with a flood, Enki's warning to the survivor Utnapishtim, the creation of humans from clay and divine blood to relieve the lesser gods of their labour. Sitchin turned that last story into genetic engineering, with humans as a slave race spliced from Homo erectus and Anunnaki DNA. The idea has since spread far beyond his books into television, online video and popular belief.

Technology

Ancient-astronaut writing attributes to the Anunnaki flight, nuclear weapons, which it reads into the destruction of Sodom and of Sumerian cities, and biotechnology. The evidence offered is iconographic: winged discs, figures in what are said to be helmets, and the 'rocket' shapes of temples. Archaeologists read the same images as religious symbols with well-understood meanings.

Craft

Sitchin identified the winged sun disc, a widespread Near Eastern royal symbol, as a depiction of Nibiru and of Anunnaki craft. Mainstream scholarship identifies it as a symbol of the sun god and of kingship, used from Egypt to Persia.

Communication

The gods speak in the epics; the ancient-astronaut version adds nothing beyond reinterpretation of those texts.

Earth encounters

There are no encounter reports. The Anunnaki are the most searched alien topic on the internet because of a chain of popularisation: Sitchin's books, the ancient-astronaut television genre from 2009 onward, and a vast online ecosystem of videos that repeat the claims. The archaeological record they draw on is real and magnificent; the reading is not.

Lore & history

The Anunnaki story is a modern myth built on an ancient one, and it is worth knowing both. The Sumerian and Babylonian texts, the Enuma Elish, the Atrahasis, the Epic of Gilgamesh, are among the oldest literature on Earth and can be read in good translation. XenoAtlas lists the Anunnaki as folklore and speculative, and recommends the originals.
