AquaticThe Deep Ones
The finned ocean-dweller is a fixture of fiction from Lovecraft's 'Deep Ones' to modern film. Astrobiologists do take ocean worlds seriously as habitats, which gives the Aquatic a speculative edge; the being itself remains fiction.

Physical profile
The Aquatic is a streamlined, finned humanoid with blue-grey skin, gill structures at the neck, large dark eyes and a crest of fins along the head and forearms. It is built for deep water and pressure rather than for the shore.
Reported origin
Oceanic worlds, unspecified. Astrobiologists consider ocean worlds, including the ice-covered moons Europa and Enceladus in our own system, among the most promising habitats for life.
Culture
Deep-sea cities and a peaceful, insular society in fiction.
Technology
Pressure-adapted and, in fiction, based on materials and energy sources that work under water.
Craft
Not described.
Communication
Sonic, in the lore.
Earth encounters
There are no cases. The Deep Ones of H. P. Lovecraft's The Shadow over Innsmouth (1936) gave the type its subtitle and its most influential form; the Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954) and The Shape of Water (2017) carried it into film.
Lore & history
XenoAtlas lists the Aquatic as fictional and speculative.
NASA's Europa Clipper, launched in 2024, will survey the ocean beneath Europa's ice; the Aquatic is the shape fiction gives to what such missions might one day find.
