Cephalopod vs Aquatic

No. The Cephalopod is a fictional octopus-like intelligence; the Aquatic is the broader water-dwelling alien of fiction.

The difference

The Cephalopod is the thinking alien of recent fiction, from Ted Chiang's Arrival to the octopus-minded creatures of speculative biology. The Aquatic is the older water-world type. The Cephalopod is defined by a different kind of mind; the Aquatic by a different kind of habitat.

Both are fictional and both have grown as scientists have learned how intelligent real octopuses are.

  • Both belong to the Aquatic and amphibian types family in the Atlas.
  • Reported height: Cephalopod 4′11″ – 6′7″; Aquatic 5′11″ – 8′2″.
  • Claimed origin: Cephalopod Aquatic worlds; Aquatic Oceanic worlds.
  • Neither appears in any of the Atlas case files; both are known through literature rather than sightings.

In their own dossiers

Cephalopod

The Cephalopod is a humanoid with a tentacled lower face, large forward eyes, and smooth grey-blue skin capable, in the lore, of changing colour and texture like an octopus's. The body is bipedal, with arms that may end in tentacles or in hands. Renderings emphasise intelligence and calm rather than menace.

Aquatic

The Aquatic is a streamlined, finned humanoid with blue-grey skin, gill structures at the neck, large dark eyes and a crest of fins along the head and forearms. It is built for deep water and pressure rather than for the shore.
