James Fox's documentary marshals astronauts, senators, intelligence officials and the Nimitz pilots into the most sober high-profile film on the subject. It leans on testimony from people with careers to lose, and treats the question as one of evidence and secrecy rather than spectacle. The best starting point for a newcomer who wants the serious version.

Dan Farah's film gathers dozens of current and former officials, including figures from the 2023 congressional hearing, to argue that a crash-retrieval programme has been hidden from Congress. It is the on-camera case for disclosure at its strongest; watch it beside the Pentagon's flat denial and decide for yourself.

A four-part Netflix series that revisits the Ariel School sighting, a Texas mass event, the Nimitz encounter and a Welsh case, giving each community room to speak. Produced under Steven Spielberg's Amblin, it is the current model for treating witnesses seriously on screen.

Luis Elizondo and the To The Stars team walk through the modern military cases.
The series that rode the 2017 New York Times revelations, following former AATIP head Luis Elizondo as he lays out the Navy encounters and the case for official study. Advocacy as much as journalism, but a clear primer on why the subject re-entered the mainstream.

James Fox's follow-up to The Phenomenon investigates the Varginha case, interviewing witnesses and pressing the claims of a military recovery. It takes the case at its strongest; the Atlas file gives the sceptical reading alongside.

A team of scientists and investigators spends each season probing the Uinta Basin ranch for UFOs, anomalies and cattle-mutilation lore. It is more ongoing experiment than documentary, and the driver behind Skinwalker Ranch's enormous current search interest.

Jeremy Corbell's portrait lets Bob Lazar retell, thirty years on, his account of working on alien craft at S-4. Sympathetic rather than sceptical, it is the fullest version of the story that made Area 51 famous. The Lazar page gives the unresolved questions.

A tight, technical reconstruction of the 2004 Tic Tac event.
A short, well-made film that walks through the Nimitz encounter with the sailors and radar operators who were there, focusing on the physical data rather than the mythology. A good companion to the case file.

Mirage Men
The uncomfortable story of how US intelligence used UFO lore as disinformation.
Based on Mark Pilkington's book, this film follows the claim that elements of US intelligence deliberately fed UFO myths to discredit a researcher and cover real programmes. It is the essential sceptical counterweight, and it complicates every other film on this list.

Built from the files of the Mutual UFO Network, the series dramatises decades of civilian reports. Uneven and credulous in places, but a broad survey of the grassroots record that official studies never held.
