The sites the lore points to

The ancient-astronaut hypothesis rests on places: pyramids too precise, stones too heavy, carvings too strange for the people who made them. This page takes each site in turn and sets the claim beside what excavation, chronicles and tool marks actually show. The people who built these places deserve the credit, and the claims deserve a fair hearing.

The Great Pyramid of Giza

Giza, Egypt · c. 2560 BCE, reign of Khufu, Fourth Dynasty

The claim

Too precise, too heavy and too aligned to be the work of Bronze Age labour; the pyramids encode the stars of Orion's Belt and were built, or designed, by visitors.

What archaeology finds

Quarries, workers' villages, bakeries, tally marks and the papyrus diary of an overseer named Merer, found in 2013, document who built it and how. The Orion alignment argument of Bauval and Gilbert requires flipping the sky map and has not been accepted. The precision is real; so was the workforce.

The Nazca Lines

Nazca Desert, Peru · c. 500 BCE – 500 CE, Nazca culture

The claim

Runways and landing markers for craft, visible only from the air, so made for beings who flew.

What archaeology finds

The figures were made by removing dark surface stones to expose pale ground, a technique a small team can reproduce with stakes and cord in days. They are visible from surrounding hills, and their subjects, hummingbirds, monkeys, spiders, match Nazca pottery. Most archaeologists read them as ritual pathways tied to water.

Puma Punku

Tiwanaku, Bolivia · c. 500–600 CE, Tiwanaku culture

The claim

Machine-cut andesite blocks with interior right angles and identical modular 'H' stones that no pre-Columbian tool could make.

What archaeology finds

The stones are volcanic andesite and sandstone, worked with harder hammerstones, sand abrasion and templates; the repeating H blocks show the tolerance you get from copying a master. Unfinished blocks on site show the process. The Tiwanaku also built the Akapana pyramid and irrigated fields for a city of tens of thousands.

Baalbek

Beqaa Valley, Lebanon · Temple platform 1st century BCE – 1st century CE, Roman; earlier sanctuary beneath

The claim

The Trilithon, three blocks of about 800 tonnes each, and a quarried block of over 1,000 tonnes, could not have been moved by Romans; the platform is a landing pad from a far older, non-human construction.

What archaeology finds

The blocks are Roman, quarried a few hundred metres away on a downhill route, and German excavations in 2014 documented the quarry and the transport method: capstans, sledges and large crews, all within Roman engineering as described by Vitruvius. The largest block was left in the quarry because it was too big, which is not the record of a species with anti-gravity.

Sacsayhuamán

Cusco, Peru · 15th century CE, Inca, on earlier Killke foundations

The claim

Polygonal walls of blocks up to 120 tonnes fitted so tightly that a blade cannot pass between them, beyond Inca capability and therefore inherited from an older, non-human builder.

What archaeology finds

Spanish chroniclers watched the Inca move and fit stones of this kind. The fit comes from trial-and-error dressing with hammerstones and from scribing each block to its neighbour; tool marks and unfinished blocks survive. The Inca built the site within living memory of the conquest.

Göbekli Tepe

Şanlıurfa, Turkey · c. 9500–8000 BCE, Pre-Pottery Neolithic

The claim

Monumental carved pillars six thousand years older than Stonehenge, built by hunter-gatherers who could not have managed it alone; evidence of a lost civilisation or outside instruction.

What archaeology finds

The site is the reason archaeologists revised their model of the Neolithic, not evidence against it. Excavation shows the pillars were quarried nearby, carved with flint tools, and raised by communities that gathered seasonally, with the labour of feasting-scale groups. It changes what hunter-gatherers were thought capable of; it does not require anyone else.

The Dogon of Bandiagara

Mali · Oral tradition recorded 1931–1950s

The claim

The Dogon knew that Sirius has an invisible companion star with a fifty-year orbit, knowledge that could only have come from amphibious visitors, the Nommo, from the Sirius system.

What archaeology finds

The 'Sirius B' details appear in the accounts of one French ethnographer, Marcel Griaule, and not in earlier or later fieldwork; the anthropologist Walter van Beek found no Dogon who knew them in the 1990s. Sirius B was discovered in 1862 and widely discussed in the 1920s, when European visitors and missionaries were in the region. The likeliest source of the knowledge is Europe.

Teotihuacan

Valley of Mexico, Mexico · c. 100 BCE – 550 CE

The claim

The city's layout mirrors the solar system and the Pyramid of the Sun's proportions encode pi; sheets of mica in its walls are electrical insulation for advanced machinery.

What archaeology finds

The 'solar system' layout was proposed before Pluto's orbit was known and depends on choosing which structures count. Mica was used in Mesoamerica for its shine and was mined in Oaxaca; it insulates nothing here. The city was built by a Mesoamerican society that housed 100,000 people and traded across the region.

The Abydos 'helicopter'

Temple of Seti I, Abydos, Egypt · c. 1290 BCE, reign of Seti I

The claim

A carved panel shows a helicopter, a submarine and a jet aircraft, proof that the Egyptians saw modern or alien machines.

Made famous by: Internet lore from the 1990s; Ancient Aliens

What archaeology finds

The panel is a palimpsest: Seti I's titles were carved, then plastered over and re-carved for Ramesses II. Where the plaster has fallen away, the two sets of hieroglyphs overlap and produce the 'machines'. Egyptologists can read both layers.

The tomb lid of Pakal

Palenque, Chiapas, Mexico · 683 CE, Maya

The claim

The carved sarcophagus lid shows King Pakal reclining in a rocket, hands on controls, feet on pedals, flame beneath him.

What archaeology finds

Read with Maya iconography, the lid shows Pakal falling into the jaws of the underworld along the World Tree, with the sky bird above and the sun on its path; every element has parallels on other Maya monuments. The 'rocket' reading requires turning the lid on its side and ignoring the glyphs that name the scene.

Eridu and the Sumerian king lists

Southern Iraq · Settlement from c. 5400 BCE; texts from c. 2100 BCE

The claim

The Sumerian texts describe the Anunnaki as beings from the planet Nibiru who engineered humans as workers, and record reigns of tens of thousands of years before the Flood.

Made famous by: Zecharia Sitchin, The 12th Planet (1976)

What archaeology finds

The Anunnaki are gods in the texts, and Assyriologists say Sitchin's readings of key words are wrong; 'Nibiru' names Jupiter or a crossing-point in the sky, not a planet on a long orbit. The king list's long reigns are a literary device, like the ages of the patriarchs in Genesis. Sumer is remarkable for inventing writing, not for hosting engineers.

Stonehenge

Wiltshire, England · c. 3000–2000 BCE

The claim

The bluestones were carried 150 miles by means beyond Neolithic Britain, and the alignments encode astronomical knowledge that had to be given.

What archaeology finds

The bluestone quarries in the Preseli Hills have been excavated, with tools and a loading platform dated to the right period; the stones weigh two to four tonnes and move on sledges. The solstice alignment is a single axis, achievable by anyone who watches the sun for a year. Nearby Durrington Walls housed the builders.
