Physical profile

Shadow people are described as dark, featureless humanoid silhouettes, usually seen at the edge of vision or in a doorway, sometimes wearing a hat or a hood, occasionally with pale or red points where eyes would be. They are two-dimensional in many accounts, like a shadow with nothing casting it, and they vanish when looked at directly.

Reported origin

Unknown and, in most tellings, not extraterrestrial at all. Shadow people belong to ghost lore and to the folklore of sleep, and only some modern writers have folded them into the alien catalogue.

Culture

None described. Shadow figures are encountered, not understood.

Technology

None.

Craft

None.

Communication

Almost never. The figures are described as watching, standing or approaching, and the experience is one of dread rather than message.

Earth encounters

Reports of shadow figures are common worldwide and were widely discussed on late-night radio and online forums in the early 2000s. The strongest correlate is sleep paralysis, a well-studied state in which the sleeper wakes unable to move while dream imagery continues, producing a sense of presence, pressure on the chest and a dark figure in the room. Cultures name that figure differently: the Old Hag in Newfoundland, the kanashibari of Japan, the mara of Scandinavia.

Sleep paralysis affects a large minority of people at least once, and studies in several countries have found that a sense of an evil presence, and often a visible dark figure, is among its most common features. The neurologist Baland Jalal and the psychologist Christopher French have both written on how culture shapes the figure seen. The 'hat man' of internet folklore is a specific modern instance: a tall silhouette in a wide-brimmed hat reported by many people who had no prior contact with each other's accounts, which suggests a shared perceptual template rather than a shared visitor.

Lore & history

XenoAtlas lists the Shadow as folklore and reported, because the experiences are real and frequent even though the interpretation is not. The type is the archive's reminder that the mind furnishes its own visitors.
