John E. Mack
The Pulitzer-winning Harvard professor who studied abductees as sane witnesses.
Mack was a professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and a Pulitzer Prize-winning biographer who, in the 1990s, turned to studying people who reported alien abduction. He concluded that they were psychologically healthy and were describing something real to them, whatever its ultimate cause, and published Abduction in 1994.
Harvard convened a committee to review his work and, after controversy, affirmed his academic freedom. He interviewed the children of the Ariel School in Zimbabwe on film. He died in a road accident in London in 2004. His standing gave the abduction question a rare academic seriousness.
