The Mantid is one reported type within the wider Insectoid category, which otherwise comes mainly from science fiction.
The difference
Mantid is the specific type; Insectoid is the family. Mantids are reported in abduction accounts as tall, praying-mantis-like figures standing behind the Greys as if in charge. Insectoids in general span ant-like soldiers, hive minds and beetle forms drawn mostly from fiction.
The Mantid has a small first-hand report base; the broader Insectoid does not.

The Mantid is the most specific of the insectoid reports. Witnesses describe a being between six and nine feet tall, thin to the point of frailty, with a triangular head, large dark or iridescent eyes, a small mouth, folding forelimbs, and a hunched posture that recalls a praying mantis at rest. Colouring is described as brown, green, grey or gold. Some accounts add a segmented body or a robe-like covering. Movement is slow and deliberate, and the being is almost always described as standing back from the action.
The Insectoid is a broad category rather than a single reported being. Descriptions include beings with chitinous plated bodies, compound or multifaceted eyes, antennae, mandibles or a small beaked mouth, and limbs jointed in ways that do not match human anatomy. Colouring runs from black and bronze to gold and green. Heights vary widely, from small ant-like workers to the towering Mantid, which XenoAtlas catalogues separately because it has its own witness tradition.
