Betty and Barney Hill
The New Hampshire couple whose 1961 case created the alien-abduction narrative.
Betty and Barney Hill were a married couple, active in the civil-rights movement, who in September 1961 lost two hours on a night drive through the White Mountains. Under hypnosis in 1964 they separately described being taken aboard a craft and examined by small grey beings, with Betty shown a star map.
Publicised in 1965 and dramatised in the 1975 television film The UFO Incident, their account became the template every later abduction followed, and the reason the Grey dominates the imagery. Barney died in 1969; Betty remained a public figure in the field until her death in 2004.
