The Miami Mall 'Aliens'
A large police response to a brawl at a Miami shopping centre on New Year's Day was recast online as a cover-up of ten-foot 'shadow aliens' seen in the crowd. Police said it was a fight among teenagers; no creature was ever shown.

What happened
On the evening of 1 January 2024, dozens of police cars converged on Bayside Marketplace after a fight involving a group of teenagers, some of whom set off fireworks in the crowd. Aerial footage of the response was widely shared, and within a day posts claimed that the real cause was a group of tall, dark, shadowy beings that had been seen walking through the mall, and that the police had cleared the area to conceal them. A blurry clip showing a dark shape among the crowd went viral.
Aftermath
The Miami Police Department published a statement and video mocking the claim, explaining that the response was to a large fight and that four juveniles had been arrested. The 'alien' clip was shown to be a low-resolution shadow of an ordinary person. The story nonetheless became the year's most shared alien meme, and the phrase 'Miami mall aliens' has stayed in circulation.
Explanations
A conventional public-order incident amplified by a compression artefact and the appetite of social platforms for a mystery. The Atlas includes it because it is one of the most searched 'alien' events of the decade, and because it shows how a modern flap forms in hours rather than weeks. Fully explained.
