The Allagash Abductions
Four art students on a canoe trip saw a bright object over the lake and lost time. Twelve years later, under hypnosis, they described being taken aboard and examined. One of the four later said the abduction part was invented.

What happened
Night-fishing from a canoe, the four men saw a large, bright, silent object over the trees. Charlie Foltz signalled it with a flashlight, and it moved toward them with a beam of light. The next thing they remembered was standing on the shore with the fire they had built burnt down to embers. In 1988, after Jim Weiner reported recurring dreams, the group underwent hypnosis with the researcher Raymond Fowler and each described being taken aboard the craft and examined by beings with large eyes.
The beings
Under hypnosis the men described beings with large heads, large almond-shaped eyes, small mouths and four-fingered hands, working in a bright room with examination tables: the Grey of the 1980s literature.
Aftermath
Fowler's book The Allagash Abductions (1993) and a television dramatisation made the case well known. In 2016 Chuck Rak told a newspaper that the sighting of the object was real but that the abduction details were embellished under hypnosis and for the book. The other three have disputed his account.
Explanations
The case illustrates the problem of hypnotic regression conducted more than a decade after the event by a researcher immersed in the abduction literature. The original sighting has never been explained; the abduction rests on recovered memory, which one participant has disowned.
